Top 5 Earth-Friendly Foods of a College Student

It is well-known that a college student is on a budget. It is also well-known that Earth-Friendly foods can run high in price. However, there are 5 key Earth-Friendly items I like to keep around my dorm room that I think are worth the cost.

1. LARABAR

The best aspect of LARABARs are all of the desert-like flavors and how true the flavors are. Some of my favorite flavors are Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Banana Bread, and Pecan Pie. Each ranges in calories (190-300) per 1.8 oz bar, but none are made with anything but whole foods. For instance, the only ingredients in the Banana Bread flavor are almonds, dates, and unsweetened bananas. Since this product is quite high in calories I personally enjoy it as a desert. This product also has many healthy components to it as well though; 5 g of fiber, 6 g of protein, and 460 mg of potassium in one Banana Bread bar. This product also makes a great Grab-and-Go breakfast food. The price is around $1.08 per bar. The 16-bar boxes are $16.88 on Amazon.com and made from 100% recycled paperboard.
LARABARs are gluten, dairy, and soy free. They are a non-gmo, vegan, and kosher snack.

2. Stonyfield Farm Yogurt

This has been one of my go-to products for quite some time now. After growing up on primarily organic foods, my stomach is easily upset by the food on my campus. Yogurt is one of the best foods to cure an upset stomach. My favorite flavor is the Low-fat “Chocolate Underground” but I am also a fan of “White Chocolate Raspberry.” The best part of these yogurts is that they will last in a mini-fridge for almost a month; far outlasting a non-organic yogurt.

3. Naked Juice

I have always been a fruit smoothie fan, so Naked Juice has quickly become one of my favorite products. Naked Juices are pure fruit puree juices. For instance, my favorite flavor, “Strawberry Machine” includes 13 raspberries, 11 strawberries, 3 cranberries, 1 ½ apples, ¼ pomegranate, 1/3 orange, ½ banana, and 7 red grapes. This flavor also includes 8g flax seeds, 4384 mg omega-3, 2 mg vitamin B6, 6mcg vitamin B12, 780mg potassium, and 5g fiber. This is definitely one of my favorite breakfast choices. And on my campus I can buy them at our “grocery stores.”
The bananas in this product are Rainforest Alliance Certified.

4. Whole Food’s 365 Brand Organic Oatmeal

This is a product that I have been enjoying for years. My favorite flavor is “Maple Spice.” This is one of those organic products that tastes very similar to the non-organic version, but is much better for your body and the environment. Besides being very good for you, oatmeal fills you up. Each bowl is one less time I have to leave my dorm to go searching food. This is critical when studying for an exam.

5. IZZE Natural Sparkling Fruit Juice

Although I had seen this product frequently at Starbucks, I never got around to trying it until I found a 4-pack of the cans at Target. These drinks are absolutely refreshing. It is just a simple mix of natural juice and sparkling water with no added sweetners or preservatives. The natural sweetness from the fruit makes this drink quite similar to a soda, without the unnecessary calories. My favorite flavor is Blackberry at only 70 calories per  8.4 ounce can. These drinks can be quite pricy, however; I spent around $10 for 4 cans.
Izze is Gluten-free and Vegan.
